Faerie Queen edition by Jennie Taylor Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed this YA lesbian romance. The author does a great job of creating a bridge that helps you suspend belief and take the journey from normal real world to a realm where there truly is magic. She does so while including a wonderful teanage first and forever love scenario. I would love to see a epilogue or sequel. I dont want to provide any spoilers so I will just say as a thirty something adult who remembers that age well, this was a fun read that took me from happy to sad, it frustrated me to the poiny of almost angry and took me back to happy. Any book that makes you feel invested in the characters outcome is well worth it. I was not paid for this review but did offer to write one since I was granted permission to be a beta reader and I throughly enjoyed the book. ( Have since re read it!) I recomend checking out this Authors other books too. Becca being my Favorite!
I read this book in a weekend and never wanted it to end. It was fun with enough drama to keep your interest. I hope there is a sequel one day to see how the Queen and her Lady fare.
fast-paced writing style, never a dull moment
I really like this story and the premises it was set upon. I wish it would be longer. It's definitely for teens or young adults.
Cheers
“Faerie Queen” is the story of two teenage girls, Renee and Cecilia. Renee is human, while Cecilia is her best friend and a faerie princess. It traces the trials Renee faces as she accompanies Cecilia to her homeworld, a place filled with mythical/fairy tale creatures that aren’t quite what she or the reader would imagine.
One of my favorite things about the novel is that the author puts in the time to do world-building with interesting twists on genre favorites such as faeries, elves, and orcs. The faerie kingdom, in particular, is expanded through the details of operating as a human in this foreign environment. Renee has a lot to adapt to. Reading about her navigating just the basics of life gave a load of information on daily life in Sheaubairnia that was fascinating.
The young protagonist struggles with her own emotional development (mainly the attraction to her best friend and sudden adult responsibilities) in a completely believable teenage fashion while still addressing the various threats aimed at the royal faerie family. The romantic subplot propels the story along without overwhelming the fantasy elements. It was a good balance that propelled the story forward and kept me engaged.
I liked this book and hope there will be more in this world. While “Faerie Queen” is a stand alone story, it could easily move into a series. The environment the author created allows for expansion in many different directions and I’d love to see some of the other kingdoms fleshed out more in other stories, especially the merfolk.
Overall, a quick and engaging read.
I like modern twists on high fantasy and "Faerie Queen" is a nice one. Plenty of the familiar, but enough differences to suggest these fantasy races are there own existence and the ones in our stories are a reflection of them. Add in a bit of sweet yuri mutual unrequited love, which is, of course, not unrequited at all, and it makes for a wonderful story that is hard to put down.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The first thing that I noticed in Faerie Queen was how the faerie world was a separate world than the human world. The faerie world did not have the "Middle Earth" feel that a lot of books in the fantasy genre have. I thought this added a unique quality to the story, and thought that discussing how challenging it was for Renee to perform simple tasks in the faerie world (like opening a door) added realism to the story.
The second thing that I liked was that the author really connected with the mid - to older- teens in how she presented the internal struggle with self-esteem and inner-confidence that most girls in this age group go through. I found myself empathizing more with Renee than Cecilia, but I am sure that there are plenty of girls out there who will empathize with Cecilia.
I enjoyed the combination of lightheartedness and seriousness as the protagonists deal with "normal teenage" issues along with darker "grown-up" issues. I think the author created a good balance of the two, which prevented it from being too dark without adding too much levity when addressing the issues that the protagonists faced.
Finally, I enjoyed how the author addressed the issue of sexuality. I was happy to see that Renee's family accepted her sexuality; without implying that it was "unusual" or "aberrant." I know that in reality that this is not always the case, but it was nice to see it addressed in such a positive and sensitive manner.
If my niece was not a toddler and could actually read, I would not only be comfortable with her reading this book, but I would buy it for her. The author kept the romance from being "hot and heavy" without coming across as prudish, and did a great job of addressing the idea of acceptance using a mix of realistic characters in a fantasy setting.
great world, great story!
